Dangerous ingredients in foods, such as arsenic, lead or melamine, are an even more dangerous to babies than adults, as kidney and liver are not fully developed yet. | © Veterinarians without Borders

Melamine is a white, odourless powder used, among other things, for the production of plastic and adhesives. When we recall the melamine scandal surrounding Chinese baby food in 2008, unscrupulous fraudsters adulterated milk powder and other dairy products with melamine to fake a higher protein content. The consequences: Eleven infants died of kidney failure and around 300,000 children fell sick...

Veterinarians are rare in Africa and often unaffordable for small farmers or pastoralists. Therefore, Veterinarians without Borders has enabled young Maasai to be trained as veterinarians to ensure the health of farm animals on site. | © Veterinarians without Borders

Veterinarians play a key role in food safety. Not only are they the first persons to contact whenever the welfare of farm animals is in question. In a large-scale international operation, 12.000 tons of illegal or potentially dangerous food were seized. It was already the ninth so-called operation OPSON carried out in cooperation with authorities in 83 countries worldwide, coordinated by Europol and Interpol.

The products' value is 28 million Euros. 42 % of the seized products were of animal origin. 320 tons of dairy products were...

In Africa and Asia alone, an incredible 770 million people suffer from hunger. | © Veterinarians without Borders

The World Food Day should draw attention to the fact that millions of people worldwide are still suffering from hunger. The concern about whether the next meal will provide enough food for oneself and the family is unfortunately omnipresent for many people in developing countries, but it is hardly imaginable for people in...
