Our project to help small-scale farmers in Tanzania in the form of a mobile school has entered its third year of implementation. Whereas our activities have so far been largely limited to the Dodoma region in the heart of Tanzania, this year we plan to hold training courses across the country. From Lake Victoria in the west of the country to the Pacific coast in the east we...

Veterinarians are rare in Africa and often unaffordable for small farmers or pastoralists. Therefore, Veterinarians without Borders has enabled young Maasai to be trained as veterinarians to ensure the health of farm animals on site. | © Veterinarians without Borders

Veterinarians play a key role in food safety. Not only are they the first persons to contact whenever the welfare of farm animals is in question. They bear a great responsibility towards society by administering medicines in case of illnesses and not least by inspecting meat of slaughtered animals.

Antibiotic resistances in developing countries are only one example, how serious the consequences...

People in developing countries are particularly vulnerable to food fraud. | © Veterinarians without Borders

For the past few years, Veterinarians without Borders has been on track of global food fraud. In 2008, we managed to reveal a food scandal over milk powder in Africa contaminated with melamine and lead. Due to food shortages, Africa is dependent on milk powder imports. In addition, mothers are often malnourished or HIV positive. To feed their babies, they depend on milk powder. But:...

This year, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) celebrates its 75th anniversary. With the primary goal of eliminating hunger in the world, FAO's tasks include raising standards for food and living and improving the production and distribution of food.

Against the background of the worldwide spread of the Corona virus, the FAO has published the...

19 organised crime groups were dismantled and 406 suspects arrested during the recent operation against organised food fraud.

In a large-scale international operation, 12.000 tons of illegal or potentially dangerous food were seized. It was already the ninth so-called operation OPSON carried out in cooperation with authorities in 83 countries worldwide, coordinated by Europol and Interpol.

The products' value is 28 million Euros. 42 % of the seized products were of animal origin. 320 tons of dairy products were...

VSF trainee Bernadeta Philipo is thankful for the good pumpkin harvest this year. | © Veterinarians without Borders

Pumpkins are among the oldest cultivated plants in the world and are not only popular in our country. For the Sandawe in East Africa, they are an important staple food and are regularly on the menu of every family. Reason enough for VSF staff member John Laffa and the trainees of our project Mobile school for Sandawe agro-pastoralists to also plant pumpkins. Fortunately,...
